Children with severe, chronic gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) may need surgery to correct GERD if their symptoms are not relieved through other medical treatments. If left untreated, chronic gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) can cause complications such as aspiration pneumonia, ulcers within the esophagus, bleeding or scarring of the esophagus, and failure to thrive.
